Satellite Services Can't Be Contained Like Other Things
Times of unrest, such as those experienced recently in countries
like Egypt, are opportunities for the country's government to try to
stifle organizational attempts by the opposition and spread the word to
everyone concerned about what is really going on. These events have led
Egypt for example to shut down the country's internet service and halt
all organizing on a massive scale. These governments always play the
"threat to national security" card and blame the internet and other
electronic devices for fueling much of the trouble and is an official
real threat.
It is very evident that many of the different forms of communication can be easily cut off. The government obviously has the power to sever means of various communication methods and isolate the entire populace from outside influence and internal information. This effectively put a wrench into the gear box of communication between citizens of the country and outside news gatherers that brought news and information gathering and sending to a halt, therefore stopping many attempts to gather protesters into massive numbers.
Everything, including the internet, cell/land line phones and satellite/cable TV were also interrupted. One way this was easily achieved was that they have a limited number of carriers and the isolation of the area, mainly be a desert and the bordering countries had little or no coverage leakage. Another ace in the hole for the Egyptian government is the prior agreements with all in country telecommunications companies is that they must abide by any decrees sent forth by the government at any time. Egypt is just one of many countries that have such agreements.
It is a whole other story though when they technology they are trying to silence is satellite based. Turning off cell phones and the internet does not affect a satellite phone or satellite broadband internet service. That fact alone makes satellite services very attractive for people when making purchasing decisions.
The huge and heavy cost of a sat phone is enough to keep many people from having the phone and the ones that do have them handy have enough money so they are usually not the cause for the internal problems toward the country's government leaders. Another fact to consider is that most all satellites being put up belong to and are funded and owned by large international companies and governments, who have no problem turning off the services when necessary.

Satellite phones will not be shut down during most any type of situation. There is also satellite broadband that gives reliable connectivity as well.
