Communicating Better With Personality Profiling

In today's fast paced world, it's easy to overlook the finer details of human communication. However we often find ourselves in positions of conflict because of mis-communication. The more notorious example of these situations involve the communication between men and women, especially in couples. How many times do you feel misunderstood, unable to relate to, hurt or confused by the opposite sex? In fact there is nothing mysterious about it, and it has to do with personality profiles. In this article we will examine how an active approach towards personality profiling can help you understand yourself better and communicate better with your peers.

Have you ever noticed that some people are incapable of appreciating science fiction? Do you know somebody who only sees the glass half empty? Do you realize that some people relate better to emotions whereas others relate better to facts? These and many other behaviors can be explained by personality profiles. People develop distinct personalities as a result of their past experiences and their genetic heritage, these characteristics are anchored into their adult identities and will affect their behavior and their communication style. More importantly people's personality profile will determine which communication style they are more responsive to. This is the secret that some professionals use to be more successful with their customers. Experienced salesmen for example know how to quickly analyze for a potential customer's personality traits in order to better pitch the product. Spies are trained to profile potential informants in order to recruit them.

The main advantage of personality profiling is to present yourself in the best possible lights in social situations. Some people are satisfied with being themselves when they interact with others, however in today's culture of mass communication where relationships are built fast and wide and social networking is a professional necessity, having the awareness and skills to communicate better and control the content of conversations can make a huge difference.

The most famous of all personality profiling tool is the Myers Briggs. This system was developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers in 1962, it defines 16 different personality profiles based on 4 dimensions. The first concerns relationship to the outside world, the second the ability to comprehend alternate realities, the third a thought process which is emotional or rational, the fourth an organization style which is static or dynamic.

At the corporate level, management aficionados developed their own profiling system to better communicate with their employees. This resulted in the definition of 4 categories of personality according to affiliative and directive tendencies.

Finally, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) advocates came up with their own dimensions of personality called metaprograms, some of which deserve consideration because they are not covered by other systems. For example some people will notice differences first when comparing two objects, while others register similarities (people who notice differences first have a tendency to use criticism as a defense mechanism against disappointment, and secretly hope to be proven wrong).

Using personality profiling technology is advantageous at multiple level. Not only can you profile yourself to get the best out of life but by profiling your peers, you can communicate with them better and avoid the pitfalls of mis-communication to build better relationships both personal and professional.
