Chat rooms have been around for a long time, though we seldom realize that like everything else in the world, there must have been an evolutionary trend to how the modern chat room has developed today. It began as something only hardcore computer enthusiasts used a decade or two ago to how everyone from your aged relative to even teenagers and stay at home moms or anyone, literally, can use today with a sense of ease.
They developed as a platform for fantasy gaming enthusiasts to share a common fantasy land from their home personal computers. This was way back in the late 1970s. It was termed Multi-User-Dungeons or MUD for short and it soon gained popularity beyond the realm of just gaming and became a place for people to discuss other common interests as well.
This spawned the era of the Internet Relay Chat that was created by a Finnish person meant for sharing of news related to software updates etc. Now there are several affiliated networks on a wide variety of topics and with an IRC user name one can participate in chat rooms across the board.
Then came the Java rooms which allowed users to use some graphics and this soon became the new thing. By this time the Internet revolution has set in fully and almost everyone had some access to the internet. This paved the way for the Instant messaging rooms and private rooms could be created.
Now, the latest in these room evolution is the possibility of voice chat. It has enabled conferencing to be taken to a different level and this has become a huge hit with users across the world since it has increased the sense of communication and dissolved the distances across the world.
