Power Of Hello
Hi's and hello's, some of the most widely used words in the world today have innate power that may unite races and indigenous minorities from all corners of the world. These greeting words have the ability to put together something that has never ever met before.
I was strolling down the streets of Bangkok and a thought came to my mind; that if ever I would get lost here, all those narrow-eyed people might not understand every word that I say, and that the only word they might understand I would say would probably be Hi or Hello. True enough, as I was asking a street food vendor for the direction of the hotel I and my friends were booked at, she reciprocated with a warm smile. There and then, I experienced firsthand, the infamous Thai smile and the warmth of their genuine culture.
These words often can change the way people behave on certain occasion. I witnessed a disappointed mother who had been waiting for her 16 year old son who seemed to be a little late from the usual. For no clear reason, this mother felt that something is wrong and that the young man would have to go through some really hard questioning after dinner. Yet, when the young man emerged from the front door, as he approached his mother, and with a loud voice tinged with utmost warmth and sincerity he said "Hello ma," she instantly forgot the script that she was trying to memorize in her head. All that came out her mouth were words such as "Hi son, I wonder why but I miss you? Have you been dating someone?" Then, after a second, everyone burst into deafening laughter. The rest of the dinner time was fun and so much fun, wonderful family time.
A good friend of mine, who had already been engaged for years, stood by the foyer of the hotel waiting for Mr. Dear to arrive. As usual, she was early and he could be thirty minutes late in about thirty seconds so I could feel the mounting anger in her head. I can almost see fumes of hot air coming out from her auditory meatus, the medical term used to describe the tunnel through which sound passes through. Yet, when he came out of the car, those familiar wide eyes with a loud voice that rang throughout the place, "Hello dear," erased her previous convoy of shattered emotions. In an instant, she was sweet and kissed him with so much passion and love. She loved him; he adored her.
I have never wondered how these simple words can be so powerful; I always see these working for me. They help start to bring back what was lost and bridge through any separation. If only, we all learn to use these words to build more relationships, I must say, this world can be a more peaceful place to live in. It all starts with one person saying hello or hi and that power to unite may be at work for all to see.
