Sending A Thank-You Note
When you receive a gift, there are a million things that run through your mind. Perhaps it's the exact thing you wanted and you're thinking "I love this." Or maybe it's the worst gift you have ever seen and your thinking "Why would anyone give this as a gift?" If you are extremely touched by the gift, you might be thinking about how kind the person was to remember you. Whatever thoughts ran through your mind, I hope one of them was how you wanted to say thank-you.
Saying thank-you verbally doesn't take any preparation or thought. It doesn't require that you buy anything. It only requires that you are thankful for whatever the person has done for you or given you. Some people may be intimidated by the thought of saying thank you. So they just avoid it. But this is in bad taste. You should always say thank you.
Writing a thank-you note and sending it through the mail used to be very common place. It was simply what one did when they received some kindness from another person. This was typically a lady's job. She was writing in her most beautiful handwriting and using the best stationary she could afford. One person very famous for sending thank you notes was the late Princess Diana of Wales. She was known to write a thank you note as soon as she returned from an evening out. Today, thank you notes are still used but less often. One common occasion for thank you notes is after a wedding reception. Couples will write thank-you notes for the wedding presents they received.
A thank you note is a simple thing to write. It should be sent as soon as possible, although the familiar saying still holds true: better late than never! This rule doesn't hold true if you've been hospitalized or just had a baby. Do it as soon as you able. Your thank you note should mention the specific gift or gesture you are writing about. Never send a card that says "Thank you for the gift." It's worse than not getting a thank you note at all! The thank you note should be personalized just like the gift was picked out personally.
Thank you notes should be sent for flowers, gifts, gestures of kindness, an invitation to a dinner party, or after staying as a guest at someone's home. You should also send a thank you note for all wedding gifts and after a day of entertainment with the boss, such as golfing.
