Are You Still Buying Those Premium Cable Channels?

Broadcast Television, then Cable TV service, then HD Broadcast, then Digital TV, now the latest is downloading films online and watching them on your device of choice. You can choose your desktop computer, your laptop, your Iphone, Android phone, Blackberry or your new windows phone. However, beware that not all download services are created equal. There are some out there that are not such a great deal and I won't mention any names here. There are also some that are awesome and again I won't mention any names here. Suffice to say that you have to do your homework and protect yourself.

Homework as in a quick Google search for terms like "downloading films online" will get you to a very long list of service providers. Here's what you need to look for in choosing a service. Make sure there is a stated satisfaction guarantee. See if you can check out their film/movie selection ahead of time. Make sure you don't get yourself caught up in a site that promises tons of selection but has very little to choose from once your sign up. Also be sure to use a credit card that you trust to reverse the charge if you cannot get the provided to issue a timely refund. Of course you'll only need to do this if you are not satisfied with the service.

You should also look for an unlimited service; one that has no monthly fees and only a small one time sign up [payment of somewhere between $29 and $69. Any more than that, you would be wasting money. But think of this in this way. Say you pay as much as $69 one time and you get all the films you want downloaded. The cool part is that you own these films now. You aren't renting them. They won't just play one time and self destruct in five minutes after they are watched. You don't have to give them back. They are yours!

You don't have to drive to the video store, you don't even have to go to your own postal mailbox. So I guess by now, you can tell I'm a fan of downloading films online. However, only from legal sites. Make sure they have a good reputation which again you can Google them and check them out in the cyberspace - believe me, reputations can go viral very quickly! The biggest scam is from sites that advertise "free" and then once you give them all your contact information they want you to pay for the download either by the films or by a subscription or by a lifetime payment. If you choose to not pay, they now have your email and contact information and will hound you to death from that day forward.

I am doing this myself and have nothing but the basic cable for the broadcast channels and high speed internet. I've tried direct TV and cable and in this new digital-world, there is really no good reason to get your entertainment movies any other way. The best is that I have a small network in my house with an old windows xp machine connected to my TV using an HDMI adapter and when I download a movie I put it on that system. With a wireless keyboard and mouse I can tell it to stream it to the 62 inch big screen and viola! Widescreen HD movies on my HD TV.
