5 Easy Steps to Greater Influence

Influencing is a critical skill that we should all aspire to master. After all, if you are not influencing others than they quite possibly are influencing you. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but we all feel better when we are aware that we are following out of choice and not because we are misinformed.

To start mastering this concept of influence (without using force or coercion), it is important to have a clear idea in mind about what we want to master. This month, I thought I would start with 5 simple steps to help you get started:

1. Mind how you show up. First Impressions Matter! Does the clothing you choose, the jewelry you wear and your shoes maintain a consistent message? Do they portray the message you want them to?

2. Mind your Environment as you would your appearance. As I stated in step one, first impressions matter. If someone walks into your space and it looks like a bomb exploded does that create an impression of focus, clarity and confidence? If the walk is not clear of ice and snow, or the lawn and vegetation trimmed and well kept, does it tell others that I am caring and conscientious?

3. Mind your non verbals. They speak louder than your voice does. From the first introduction to the way you enter a room, others are assessing your level of influence. They decide in a nanosecond whether or not you are trustworthy or not. Be mindful of your movements - always! Calm, deliberate gestures and movements are more influential than jittery ones.

4. Mind your voice. Does your voice project calmness or confidence? Is it high pitched and squeaky or have you perfected the deep resonating voice of a leader? Soft tones are considered more soothing more maternal whereas loud or high pitched voices are interpreted as being edgy and insecure.

5. Mind the silence. Do you know when to stop talking? Often silence has the power to influence at a far greater degree that the endless list of rationalizations. When someone uses silence well, they are often perceived as being a 'great listener' - a skill most great influencers possess.
