Losing touch with a friend or relative used to be an expensive and daunting task to locate them. Not anymore! Since the internet has come on the scene, locating someone is just at the touch of your fingertips. And, in many cases, free, or of little charge.

What would you do as your first step in locating someone you wanted to find, but did not know which city or state they lived in, or, if they are even still alive? Nowadays, most people that have the internet just begin on the internet. So, how can you make your time and effort more productive while you do your search?

First of all, it depends on how much information you have about someone. Usually, most people have the person's name and the last city and state they lived in. This is the best place to start and in most cases you find someone still in the area if they haven't changed their name, such as getting married.

You can begin with the person's maiden name to see if they are still using it. Or, they may have been married and divorced and reverted to their maiden name. The next step is to search courthouse records to locate the person's maiden name to see if any marriage license has been recorded. This can be more time consuming, since you may have to physically go to the courthouse.

The most overlooked method for locating someone is on the tax assessors rolls. If the person you are looking for owns real estate and you know the city; they will be located on the tax assessors rolls.

Social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter are also a good place to look today since many People are using their maiden names so people from the past can locate them.
