Prevention Means You'll Never Have to Find Out Who a Prank Caller Is

Prank calls can be more than annoying. If they happen repeatedly, they can become unsettling, even frightening. Knowing who is responsible for the calls is one way to ease that discomfort but if you take a few preventative steps you'll never need to find out who a prank caller is.

• Keep your number unlisted and unpublished. Some prank callers just randomly choose numbers from the phone book. If you're not there, you won't get called. Most phone companies do charge a small monthly fee for this service but it's worth it.

• If you do publish your name in the phone book, consider using only your first initial and last name, especially if you are a woman. This will prevent obscene callers from ringing you up.

• Be careful about who you give your number to. Web sites that ask for your phone number, for example, could be selling them to others and those numbers could end up in the hands of telemarketers or could become easily accessible via the Internet.

• Keep your phone number out of your voice mail or answering machine message. Some callers may just be randomly calling numbers for fun and once they have your real number you could become a repeat target.

• Never tell wrong number people your phone number. Instead, you should ask them what number they were trying to dial.

If all of this prevention does not save you from having to find out who a prank caller is then you can go to the reverse phone number look up services to identify the culprit.
